Dr. Mary Martin, BSDH, DDS, M.Ed
Dr. Mary Martin started her career in dentistry as a chairside dental assistant. She then obtained her dental hygiene degree at the University of Oklahoma in 1974 and her DDS in 1984, also at OU. Later she acquired a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Central Oklahoma. Her career has been equally divided between academics, private practice, and service to organized dentistry. Dr. Martin currently serves as the president of the Smiles for Success Foundation - the philanthropic arm of the American Association of Women Dentists. She has a long history with both organizations, having been president of both twice.
The mission of Smiles for Success is to provide cost-free dental care to women graduates of accredited job readiness and placement programs or other community-based agencies, thus helping those who are helping themselves. Under Dr. Martin’s leadership, Smiles for Success now has programs in several states and a community based program in Florida.
Her service to the profession includes many years as a professor in the Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology at the University of Oklahoma College Of Dentistry. She is an accomplished lecturer and has been nominated for countless professional and community awards, including three years as one of the Fifty Women Making a Difference in Oklahoma.
She and her husband, Dr. Steve Carson, decided to spend time in rural Oklahoma caring for the underserved; they are now providing care to Medicaid patients via Caring Hands Healthcare Clinic in McAlester, OK.
As a speaker I have had the opportunity of presenting at a variety of meetings. The Tulsa Hygiene Huddle has the 'secret recipe'. Their attention to value, quality and one of the best educational experiences hands down was palpable. The focus on 'knowledge translation' for attendees to take back to practice Monday morning is so KEY and yet so highly overlooked.
Well done Tulsa Hygiene Huddle Wishing you continued success on your commitment to advancing education for our community.
